Frequently Asked Questions
Why is medication training important for staff working with children?
Medication training helps staff understand how to safely support children who require medicines during the school or care day. Proper training reduces the risk of dosage errors, incorrect storage, and poor record-keeping. It also improves confidence when responding to medical needs in busy childcare or education environments. With more children requiring ongoing medication support, clear procedures and competent staff are increasingly important. Effective training helps create a safer environment for children, staff, and parents alike.
What topics are usually covered in the administration of medicines training for children?
Training commonly covers legislation, medication storage, administration procedures, and accurate recording practices. Staff also learn about different types of medicines and how to support children who self-administer, where appropriate. Many courses include practical guidance designed to reflect real situations in schools, nurseries, and care settings. Understanding these areas helps staff follow policies consistently and respond more effectively to children’s needs. This structured approach improves both safety standards and day-to-day confidence.
How often should staff refresh their medication administration training?
Regular refresher training helps staff stay updated with current legislation, best practice, and organisational procedures. In care settings, annual updates are often recommended to maintain knowledge, skills, and competency levels. Refresher sessions also provide an opportunity to review recording systems, emergency procedures, and practical administration techniques. Ongoing training helps identify gaps in understanding before they affect the quality of care provided. Keeping knowledge current supports safer medication management for children in education and care environments.
