Food Safety Tips for Christmas

With an estimated one million cases a year, food poisoning doesn’t stop over the festive season. Every year there are more than 500,000 cases of food poisoning. Not only are people eating more hot food to keep themselves warm, but they are also juggling entertaining family and friends with cooking impressive Christmas meals.

Here’s our top Christmas safety tips to help prevent your festivities being cut short:

  • Give yourself enough time to prepare and cook Christmas dinner to avoid hot fat and gas stove accidents that come from rushing and keep anyone not helping with dinner out of the kitchen. Wipe up any spills quickly. We offer a basic Food Safety Awareness course which is aimed at anyone who requires induction training before starting to work with food, staff who are low-risk food handlers, and those who wish to update their food safety knowledge. We also offer 4 E-Learning food courses
  • Falls are the most common accidents so try to keep clutter to a minimum. Make sure stairs are well-lit and free from obstacles, especially if you have guests
  • Never cook whilst under the influence of alcohol.
  • Keep children as far away from the oven and hob as possible.
  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Make sure the oven and hob is completely switched off before you leave the house or go to bed.

By following some sensible precautions, such as checking fairy lights for obvious signs of damage and keeping decorations and cards away from fires and other heat sources such as light fittings. everyone can switch on safely and sparkle! And don’t forget to buy batteries for toys that need them – that way you won’t be tempted to remove batteries from smoke alarms.

We offer various Fire Safety courses. We take the time to gain an understanding of your fire safety requirements and practices in your organisation to ensure we provide meaningful and relevant fire safety training.

Our courses can include the practical use of fire extinguishers and the demonstration of the use of Fire Extinguishers and Fire blankets in a ‘live fire’ situation through our environmentally friendly propane gas training rig to simulate a variety of different fire types.

Courses will provide knowledge of legal requirements, risk assessments and hazards associated with fire, together with the causes and chemistry of fire and evacuation requirements. Delegates will have the opportunity to discuss issues specific to their workplace throughout the course they are attending.
