Fire doors play a critical role in saving lives and protecting property in the unfortunate event of a fire. Make Time to Save Lives.
A fire door ensures that should a fire break out, it can be contained in a “compartment”. This keeps the fire and smoke trapped for a defined period, allowing time for people to get out and make the fire easier to tackle. Fire doors should be checked regularly, and the more they’re used the more frequently they should be checked.
So how do you know if a door is a fire door? Signs that might indicate a fire door include things like a blue ‘Fire Door’ or ‘Keep Closed’ sign, door closers and intumescent or smoke seals around the edge of the door or the frame.
All fire doors are fire rated. Some are FD30 (providing 30 minute protection), FD60 (60 minute protection) or higher. There is usually a certification mark (a label or plug) on top of the door if it is a Fire Door.
Make sure you check that all of your fire doors are fit for purpose with these 5 simple steps:
1. Check for a label. Without a certification mark, you cannot be sure this really is a fire door.
2. Check for gaps when the door is closed. Make sure gaps are no bigger than 4mm so smoke and fire can’t travel through the cracks
3. Check the intumescent seals around the door or frame (the fluffy like lining). Check they’re intact with no sign of damage. The seals will expand if they’re in contact with heat, and will stop the fire (and in some cases smoke) moving through the cracks.
4. Check all hinges are firmly fixed (3 or more of them), with no missing or broken screws.
5. Check the door closes fully. A fire door only works when it’s closed. A fire door is completely useless if it can’t close fully. Under any circumstance don’t wedge fire doors open, especially at night.
The issues around fire doors are prevalent in pretty much any sector and building type that you think of, from care homes and hospitals to schools and specialist housing.
