A building firm based in Hertfordshire has been handed a fine after a member
of the public was hit by a falling piece of machinery.

The woman was waiting for a bus on York Road in London when she was struck by
the 0.6 metre-square by two-metre high air handling unit. A crane was lifting
the object to the fifth floor of an office block but it was not secured
correctly and the unit fell out of the lifting slings when it crashed into a
mast climber, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard.

The Waltham Cross-based company, Concentra Ltd, was fined £20,000 and ordered
to pay costs of £21,000 after inspectors at the Health and Safety Executive
(HSE) judged that the accident on 26 September 2008 could have been
prevented.

The victim suffered swelling to the head, several broken bones and cuts, the
court heard. The building company was found guilty of breaching Section 3(1) of
the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
